Brad Espin 17 April 2016        OBEDIENCE IS GOD’S WILL                                [1]

Philippians 2:8

And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

Living a life of obedience unto God is doing God’s will which implies living God’s purpose for which you have been created.

Living in complete and total obedience is not easy and more difficult than we think because our human nature, the Adamic nature rebels against God’s will and purpose for our lives.

We don’t want to be told by others what to do, mainly because we always seem to know everything and what we think is best and therefore even the Apostle Paul struggled in the flesh with God’s will, His purpose and doing what God expected.

Romans 7:15, 19-2015 For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

The sad reality is that most people function daily without realising what they should be doing and where they should be and accept this as the fate or lot for their lives instead of seeking and discovering that which was intended by the Creator.

Jesus knew His purpose and He gave up His glory and left heaven to live in a human body to fulfil God’s purpose.

Hebrews 10:5-7 Therefore when He came into the world, He said: Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, But a body You have prepared for Me. In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You had no pleasure. Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come—In the volume of the book it is written of Me—To do Your will, O God.

Jesus knew God’s purpose and plan for His life

Jeremiah 29:11 I know the thoughts I have towards you says the Lord thoughts of peace not for evil to give you a hope and future.

What are busy doing? Your will or God’s will. (King Saul)

1 Samuel 15:22 And Samuel said, ‘Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.

It is not always what we are doing but why we doing what we do from an obedient heart which determines God’s will.

Mark 3:35 For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”

Obedience to God’s will determines His sons and daughters

John 9:31 “but if anyone is a worshipper of God and does his will, God listens to him.”

Obedience to God will results in God hearing our prayers.

Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good

Obedience to God’s will is being transformed by the renewing of the mind to find His good, acceptable and perfect will in all areas of our lives instead of becoming conformed to the world.

Galatians 1:4 “…who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father…”

Jesus sacrificed His life by obeying God and doing His will

I Thessalonians 5:8 “…give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Obedience to God’s will is having a thankful heart.

I Peter 2:15 “For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.”

Obedience is to do God’s will by doing good

I John 2:17 “And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

Obedience is to do God’s will and be assured of eternal life.

TALK:What and how is your talk daily? Does criticism, gossip, and words that hurt, destroy or break down governs your speech and turn friends and family away from God, because our

words are to be governed by love.

I John 3:11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

If you were standing before the throne of God how would your conversation be different?

LIFE:What manner of life are you living because Jesus is the standard of how we live, talk and do His work?

Galatians 2:20Ihave been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and thelifewhich I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

WALK: You can’t walk like Jesus unless you walk in total obedience by completely surrendering to the will of God.

Colossians 2:6-7 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

DISOBEDIENCE: Failing to surrender to God’s will eventually lead to hearing the voice of God less frequently and His voice will become softer with the result of being confused about what the will of God is for your life.

I Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.

Those who are in confusion cannot hear God’s voice or find His

will for their life because it is when free will is used to make the choice to surrender to God with your heart…by giving God your whole heart Him your heart  you will hear God.

Hearing and obeying the word of God is seeking and obeying the specific guidance of God in our lives daily as we are led by the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 7:21-23Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of MyFather in heaven.

Jesus stressed the importance of obedience to God’s will even though many think or convince themselves that they are obedient in doing God’s will…NB Why we do what we do.

Matthew 7:22-2322 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!

We do not live perfect lives and we all fail in many areas of our lives but God sees the heart of people and it is the heart of man that will separate people from God not our works and efforts.

Here are 3 reasons why we should obey to do God’s will:

Fear of God: We areto fear the Lord for who He is - God is great, majestic and awesome and we choose to obey him in order to avoid his wrath and punishment.

Hebrews 10:31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God

Reward: We obey God because there are always conditions and the promise of reward or blessings for obedience.

Joshua 1:8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful

Love: Our relationship with God is personal, intimate and based on His loves for us and our love for him and because we love God we do what pleases him.

John 14:21 Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me
