OVERCOMING AMALEK

EXODUS 17:8-16

Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in RephidimAnd Moses said to Joshua, choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand. 10 So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed12 But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13 So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. 14 Then the Lord said to Moses, Write this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven15 And Moses built an altar and called its name, The-Lord-Is-My-Banner16 for he said, because the Lord has sworn: the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

1. KNOW YOUR ENEMY

God delivered His people the Israelites from their enemy the Egyptians but when they crossed the Red Sea they were confronted by many other nations who were their enemy but more importantly the Amalekites who throughout their history troubled them.

When you came to salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, God redeemed and delivered you but that does not mean that there has not nor will there ever be attacks against your life as a Christian.

There are many spiritual attacks you will experience but never see a person as your enemy because Satan is the real enemy of your soul and he works through people trying to destroy you.   [Adam & Eve] [David & Absalom]

EPHESIANS 6:10-1210 Finally my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Over the years I have experienced certain demonic spirits that have attacked God’s people and the church and who have worked through individual people without them even being aware of it because they have opened a door to allow the enemy access into their lives.

EPHESIANS 4:26-2726 Be angry, and do not sin: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil.

The word Amalekite comes from the root word Amalak which means to travail, vexation and sorrow and when the Amalekites attacked them they tried to destroy their faith in God.

The Hebrew numerical value of the word Amalek is: 240 (Ayin=70, Mem=40, Lamed=30, Qop=100) having a total value = 240

The Hebrew numerical value of the word safeq is: (Samek=60, Pei=80, Qop=100) which also has a value of 240 = Safeq is the Hebrew word for doubt .

Therefore the Amalekites were able to cast doubt on the Israelites faith.

CAST DOUBT ON YOUR FAITH

The spirit of Amalek like all other demonic spirits camouflages and operates in the church with the purpose of breaking down and destroying the faith of people in God by casting doubt but Jesus said.

MATTHEW 16:18-2018 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Amalek is like certain demonic spirits that is identified by names from the Bible because the personality and character of this spirit is mirrored through individuals lives

  1. 1.Jezebel – manipulation and control - false worship
  2. 2.Ahab – abuse of power
  3. 3.Absalom – pride and power
  4. 4.Delilah – deception and seduction [power and spiritual sight]
  5. 5.Amalek – cast doubt

2. GOD REMEMBERS

You may have forgotten situations of your past but God has not for He remembers all that you have endured and all who have hurt, attacked, falsely accused and tried to destroy you and cast doubt on your faith in God’s purpose and plans for you..

God remembers and He does not change because His Word endures forever and He remains steadfast as He is the same yesterday today and forever.

DEUTERONOMY 32:3535 Vengeance is Mine, and recompense; their foot shall slip in due time; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things to come hasten upon them.’

God destroyed those who attacked Israel His people and He will do it again for Israel and He will do it for you as well because you are the apple of His eye and because you as His Bride belong to the Bridegroom Jesus Christ.

ROMANS 12:17-19 17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.

Moses in his final speech reminded Joshua and the people what the Amalekites had done 40 years earlier and instructed them that they were to destroy them so that any memory of this people would be completely erased.

DEUTERONOMY 25:17-19  17 Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you were coming out of Egypt, 18 how he met you on the way and attacked your rear ranks, all the stragglers at your rear, when you were tired and weary and he did not fear God. 19 Therefore it shall be, when the Lord your God has given you rest from your enemies all around in the land which the Lord your God is giving you to possess as an inheritance that you will blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. You shall not forget.

God wanted to completely blot out any existence of the Amalekites because He knew that they would never stop attacking His people and prevent them from entering into their God given destiny and therefore God’s anger was aroused against the Amalekites.

1 SAMUEL 15:1-3Samuel also said to Saul, “The Lord sent me to anoint you king over His people, over Israel. Now therefore, heed the voice of the words of the LordThus says the Lord of hosts: ‘I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, how he ambushed him on the way when he came up from Egypt. Now go and attack[a] Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’

The Prophet Samuel told King Saul that God commanded him to destroy Amalek because God remembered what Amalek did to His people.

God anger was aroused against Amalek of showing no mercy when they attacked the Israelites who were at the rear as they were weak and feeble (stragglers) when they left Egypt and were being pursued by Pharaoh - Israel had done nothing to provoke Amalek.

Amalek in their nature were opposed to God, His people, and His Kingdom.

3. OPPOSES GOD’S PLANS

GENESIS 36:12The Amalekites were descendants of Amalek who was the son of Eliphaz and his concubine Timna, the grandson of Esau, Jacob's brother who despised his birthright and sold it to Jacob.

Amalek resented Israel because of what Israel had and who they were as opposed to what they did not have and who they were not – Israel were a chosen people, a free people who belonged to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob..

The Spirit of Amalek is the spirit of opposes God and all of His plans and the only way it is removed is when this evil spirit is replaced with the Holy Spirit of God.

Throughout Israel’s history they met opposition with the Amalekites at times God allowed this because of Israel’s disobedient and rebellious nature.

Disobedience towards God

JUDGES 3:12-1312 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord. So the Lord strengthened Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord13 Then he gathered to himself the people of Ammon and Amalek, went and defeated Israel, and took possession of the City of Palms.

Rebellious nature

NUMBERS 14:41-4541 And Moses said, now why do you transgress the command of the Lord? For this will not succeed. 42 Do not go up, lest you be defeated by your enemies, for the Lord is not among you. 43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and you shall fall by the sword; because you have turned away from the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.” 44 But they presumed to go up to the mountaintop. Nevertheless, neither the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses departed from the camp. 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who dwelt in that mountain came down and attacked them, and drove them back as far as Hormah

High regard for self

NUMBERS 24:19-2019 Out of Jacob One shall have dominion, and destroy the remains of the city. 20 Then he looked on Amalek, and he took up his oracle and said: Amalek was first among the nations, but shall be last until he perishes.”

Obtained a foothold

JUDGES 6:3-5So it was, whenever Israel had sown, Midianites would come up; also Amalekites and the people of the East would come up against them. Then they would encamp against them and destroy the produce of the earth as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep nor ox nor donkey. For they would come up with their livestock and their tents, coming in as numerous as locusts; both they and their camels were without number; and they would enter the land to destroy it.

Disregard for others

1 SAMUEL 30:11-16 11 Then they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David; and they gave him bread and he ate, and they let him drink water. 12 And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs and two clusters of raisins. So when he had eaten, his strength came back to him; for he had eaten no bread nor drunk water for three days and three nights. 13 Then David said to him, “To whom do you belong, and where are you from?” And he said, “I am a young man from Egypt, servant of an Amalekite; and my master left me behind, because three days ago I fell sick.

Stole from God’s people

1 SAMUEL 30:1-2; 6; 17-19  Now it happened, when David and his men came to Ziklag, on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the South and Ziklag, attacked Ziklag and burned it with fire, and had taken captive the women and those who were there, from small to great;

Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.

17 Then David attacked them from twilight until the evening of the next day. Not a man of them escaped, except four hundred young men who rode on camels and fled. 18 So David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away, and David rescued his two wives. 19 And nothing of theirs was lacking, either small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything which they had taken from them; David recovered all.

Attacked the Lord’s Anointed

2 SAMUEL 1:3-16 And David said to him, “Where have you come from?” So he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.” Then David said to him, “How did the matter go? Please tell me.” And he answered, “The people have fled from the battle, many of the people are fallen and dead, and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.” So David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?” Then the young man who told him said, “As I happened by chance to be on Mount Gilboa, there was Saul, leaning on his spear; and indeed the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him. Now when he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.’ And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ So I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’ He said to me again, ‘Please stand over me and kill me, for anguish has come upon me, but my life still remains in me.’ 10 So I stood over him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.”

13 Then David said to the young man who told him, “Where are you from?” And he answered, “I am the son of an alien, an Amalekite.” 14 So David said to him, “How was it you were not afraid to put forth your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?” 15 Then David called one of the young men and said, “Go near, and execute him!” And he struck him so that he died. 16 So David said to him, “Your blood is on your own head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed the Lord’s anointed.’ ”

4. DESTROY GOD’S PEOPLE

ESTHER 3:1-6 After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him and set his seat above all the princes who were with him. And all the king’s servants who were within the king’s gate bowed and paid homage to Haman, for so the king had commanded concerning him. But Mordecai would not bow or pay homage. Then the king’s servants who were within the king’s gate said to Mordecai, why do you transgress the king’s command? Now it happened, when they spoke to him daily and he would not listen to them, that they told it to Haman, to see whether Mordecai’s words would stand; for Mordecai had told them that he was a Jew. When Haman saw that Mordecai did not bow or pay him homage, Haman was filled with wrath. But he disdained to lay hands on Mordecai alone, for they had told him of the people of Mordecai. Instead, Haman sought to destroy all the Jews who were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus—the people of Mordecai.

Haman was a descendant of King Agag the Amalekite whom the prophet Samuel killed and in his anger against Mordecai he purposed in his heart to destroy all the Jews.

The enemy does not only wants to hurt you a little but he wants to destroy you.

JOHN 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

We are soldiers in God’s army constantly involved in spiritual warfare and we are constantly in a battle with the enemy and there are some important lessons that we can learn from what Israel experienced at the hands of the Amalekites.

Haman the Agagite an Amalekite was enraged when Mordecai's refused to bow the knee to him which is a shadow of Jesus being tempted by Satan in the Wilderness.

MATTHEW 4:8-10Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, [b]“Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’

Mordecai’s refusal to bow does not indicate that he was stubborn or filled with pride but rather that it showed he was faithful to worship God and only God.

Mordecai's faith in God and love for God meant he was willing to risk his life by refusing to bow before an Amalekite even if Haman the Amalekite had become such a powerful man of great political importance.

5. DEFEAT THE SPIRIT OF AMALEK

The demonic spirit of Amalek seeks to distract and destroy the weak and feeble that are among God’s people but we must act upon it and be like Joshua who was willing to stand up and fight and more importantly like Moses stand upon the Rock and speak forth the word of confession as we intercede in prayer and destroy the works, plans and intentions of this spirit.

2 CORINTHIANS 10: 3-6For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not [a]carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

Far too many Christians believe the lies of Satan the author of confusion, the father of all lies because of their spiritual immaturity and because they have opened up a door and given the enemy a foothold have become weak, sick and tired and want to give up and run away but do not give the enemy a foothold.

GENESIS 4:4-7Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. So the Lord said to Cain, why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.

You need to realise that this tiredness is not a natural tiredness, this weakness is not a weakness of the flesh and this sickness is not physical sickness but a spiritual onslaught from the enemy because either you were not watching or standing in the strength of Jesus Christ.

EPHESIANS 6:13-1813 Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 Andtake the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints

Amalek is demonic and must be recognize in its source and strategy which seeks to derail our destinies in order to deal with it swiftly and victoriously because this is not something to play with as your future and possessing your God given inheritance depends on it.

God told Saul to utterly destroy Amalek and all that they have and not to spare because in doing so you give this spirit a foothold into other parts of your life and your family, therefore it is time to Arise, Advance, Occupy and Lay hold of that which God has prepared for you.

God said He would blot out the memory of Amalek but we read further that the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.

This is no longer physical Amalek but spiritual Amalek and the name Amalek means warlike.

The Hebrew root for Amalek is “AMAL” which means: to toil; wearing effect; pain; wickedness; sorrow; wearisome; trouble; mischief.

The tiredness Moses felt was not just a natural tiredness because Moses was feeling the spiritual effect of the demonic principality of Amalek that operated through this tribe.

Joshua was fighting a physical battle against the physical Amalekites but Moses was involved in a spiritual warfare against Amalek the demonic spirit which tried to wear down Moses so he would give up on his posture of intercession for Joshua and the army.

Amalek’s strategy was to pick off and take out all the stragglers that were weary and worn out, and consequently lagging behind.

Amalek’s strategy is to wear down, tire out, weaken, and pick off the people of God to keep them from the destiny of their Promised Land inheritance.

The tribe of the Amalekites descended from Esau, the grandfather of Amalek, who sold his birthright for some bean soup, because he was “weary.”

Amalek strategy is to create passivity – to wear down and wear out the people of God until they lose their posture of prayer and faith in the Spirit, and then make wrong decisions and choices regarding their destiny and inheritance.

Amalek strategy is to negatively influence causing people to disobey the written Word, spoken Word or prophetic Word given by God regarding their future.

2 CORINTHIANS 2:11lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.

But we are not ignorant of the devil’s devices and strategies.

GENESIS 9:18-27

18Sons of Noah - Shem, Ham and Japheth - Ham was the father of Canaan.

19 Sons of Noah - the whole earth was populated.

22 Ham the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father - told his two brothers

23 Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were [b]turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.

24 Noah awoke from his wine - knew what his younger son had done - he said:

“Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants he shall be to his brethren.”

26 Blessed be the Lord - the God of Shem - may Canaan be his servant

27 May God enlarge Japheth - dwell in the tents of Shem - Canaan be his servant

In Christ is every curse broken so that you may dwell in His tent

-       In him you live – Body of Christ / Yeshua [His Tent]

It is important where you come from and where you are going to.

ACTS 17:28 for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’

ALTAR CALL - INVITE

CONFESSION AND PRAYER

Heavenly Father, in the Name of Jesus, we come against the demonic spirit of Amalek and its influence as we declare in the name of Jesus Christ that we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us and is now at the right hand of the Father forever making intercession for us.

We confess that we resist weariness, tiredness and passivity and through the power of the Holy spirit we will remain strong in 2018 as you prepare us to enter 2019 being strong in the Lord to fulfil Your God given purpose and plans that You have predestined for our life.

Heavenly Father we ask that You will place people with the character of Aaron and Hur in our lives that will help lift up our hands in the battle so we may overcome and declare And we say that no weapon formed against us will prosper and in Jesus name that Amalek is defeated and has no foothold in our lives…AMEN
