ROOM FOR THE KING

                                          Luke 2:1-24

And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered everyone to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

The census ordered by Caesar Augustus was the first of its kind in the entire known world because the Roman government wanted to make sure that all citizens in the Roman Empire were paying their taxes.

The census was carried out in Israel / Palestine according to Jewish law and not the Roman way which meant that families had to register in their historical tribal town which meant that Joseph and Mary had to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem where Joseph's family from the tribe of Judah of king David’s lineage originally came from.

They travelled a distance of about 70 miles / 112 kilometres which would have taken about three days.

It is not known if motels or inns existed and people would normally stay with extended family or relations in a guest room more accurately translated an Inn. (Either in or out)

Houses had two levels, the upper level where people slept and the ground floor where the animals slept at night and the family lived during the day.

Many people would have travelled to Bethlehem for the census, and therefore all the houses were full, and Joseph and Mary had to sleep with the animals on the low level where Jesus because there was no crib was placed in a manger cut into a wall.

If Jesus was not born His birth would not have been recorded and the Crucifixion and Resurrection would not have taken place and without a resurrection death and the grave would not be conquered and the penalty of sin not dealt with and we would all be living without grace and die in our sins.

Without the birth of Jesus, Christianity would be just another religion and religion cannot save you because it is rules and regulations that place mankind under bondage.

The proof of Jesus birth is not only to be found in the Bible and written by men of God inspired by the Holy Spirit but there is external historical and archaeological records confirming that not only is the Bible accurate and true but that the Virgin Birth, Crucifixion, and Resurrection are true.

Recorded history show that Jesus Christ was known to be a real person and historic writers hostile to Christianity documented the historical facts of Jesus by claiming that he lived and that he performed miracles.

The Mishnah an early Jewish document and Josephus a Jewish historian, Tacitus a Roman historian and Phlegon a Gentile Historian all wrote that the one called Christ lived in Palestine and died under Pontius Pilate and since they recorded His death it testifies to His birth.

It was prophesied that the Messiah, the Christ / Anointed would

Be born to deliver God’s people and it is not that they did not know that Jesus would be born, however they were not living with an expectation and had missed the opportunity.

Luke 2:9-14And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

Luke 2:25-33 Simeon just and devout - waited for the consolation of Israel

Luke 2:36-38 Anna the prophetess and widower – that instant gave thanks to the Lord.

Matthew 2:4-6 Herod / chief priests, scribes gathered

Micah 5:

Isaiah 9:6-7

If only the people of Bethlehem were aware of the prophecy concerning the Christ that would be born instead of being caught up in their religion which placed them in bondage.

If only the people of Bethlehemhad known Who it was that Mary had in her womb and was about to give birth to.

If only they had been so observant of the signs as the wise men were who travelled a great distance from the East to present gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh.

If only, if only they would have been aware, known, observant and expectant then they would have made room for their King, they would have done everything in their means to accommodate their King.

2 Kings 4:8-10 There was a woman who lived in Shunem and she was a wealthy and respected person who was hospitable, kind and generous.

Shunem was 5km north of Jezreel near Mount Gilboa and when Joshua divided the land, Shunem was given to the tribe of Issachar.

Shunem means uneven probably because of the mountainous terrain.

The woman’s name is not mentioned yet what she does is so profound and it is this that matters most.

She not only recognizes Elisha to be a holy man of God, she provided him with food whenever he passed by and persuaded her husband to build a upper room furnished with a bed, lampstand, table and chair.

This woman made room in her house to receive a man of God, a prophet, a holy man because she recognized the importance and significance of Elisha.

She wanted more than a short visitation of God’s representative in her house she made room by building a room for more permanent habitation of God’s representative in her house.

There is something worth noting of having something of God in your house.

2 Samuel 6:11 The Ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed Edom the Gittite three months and the Lord blessed Obed Edom and all his household.

All that entered into the stable, the shepherds, wise men even the animals were blessed because Jesus Christ the Son of the most High God was in the house.

Today all over the world people will gather both believers and unbelievers to celebrate Christmas for various reasons which include tradition, culture, the norm in society and the spiritual significance thereof.

Sadly not many will make room for Jesus as they go about their schedule of giving and receiving presents, preparing and eating, talking and laughing.

It is sad that some only allow maybe once or twice a year to go to church to remember Jesus…either Easter or Christmas and are satisfied in doing so.

People are so caught up with the affairs of this life that either there is no room for Jesus in their lives or that they are not prepared to sacrifice in order to make room for Him.

Jesus wants more than a now and again visitation in your life, He desires a permanent habitation like the Shunnamite woman did by building on a permanent room.

Jesus wants to possess and occupy the room chamber of your heart permanently…He wants your whole heart not half a heart in serving Him.

When like the Shunnamite woman we recognize Jesus for who He is then only will we be prepared to make a room for Jesus and receive His blessing.

Genesis 14:18-20 Abraham and Melchizedek (Covenant and Blessings /Tithing)

Hebrew 7:4 Now consider how great this man was to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils.

It is not too late to make room for the King…are you aware, observant and do you know that e is Coming soon and are you living with an expectation for the return of Jesus.

You begin by making room for Jesus in your life and in your heart andHe will lead you to make room for strangers (Angels), neighbour and others.

Do you have room or are you prepared to make room at your dining table for someone and thereby live the true message and spirit of Christmas…GIVING

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son

Love came down and Love seeks a room in your home so that your home will be blessed and reveal His love.
